17th September Red Stag Redwood Forest Relay.

Moa women end Hawks Run !

For the last 15 years Hamilton City Hawks masters women team has won the Red Stag Redwood Forest Relay at Rotorua and were favoured to retain the title again this past weekend. However a well prepared team from Feilding Moa Harriers ended this reign, surprising all pre-race predictions by heading Hawks in by nearly 3 minutes.

The 5 x 5km relay attracted 111 run and walk teams from all over the North Island to what is a mostly off-road trail run through parts of the Redwood Forest.

The foundation for the Feilding Moa win was set up from the beginning by first lap runner Wendy Cottrell-Teahan, running a swift 19 minutes 14 seconds to hand a 2:22 lead over to Sandi Pearson. Pearson protected the lead position well, with Melissa Thorne taking over 2:14 in front. Thorne extended the lead over Hawks to 2:16 before handing over to Moa's penultimate team member, Juanita Paterson who with the third best masters women lap of the day, 21:20, provided a lead margin of 4:07 to the final runner Lisa Kuhnert. Despite a good run by Hamilton Hawks final runner, Bridget Ray in 20:30, Kuhnert brought the delighted Moa team home first, clear by 2min 58sec.

The masters men team from Feilding Moa also surprised, taking 3rd place in that grade, although admittedly conceding just over 2 minutes to the Masters Women team.

A close local rivalry this season between Wendy Cottrell-Teahan and Rob Dabb continued, with Rob just edging Wendy out by 2 seconds on his lap.

Feilding Moa team results from the Red Stag Redwood Forest Relay, Rotorua, 17th Spetember.

Masters Women (all 5km): 1st 1:46:17 with Wendy Cottrell-Teahan 19:14; Sandi Pearson 21:55; Melissa Thorne 22:11; Juanita Paterson 21:20; Lisa Kuhnert 21:39.

As you know, Greg Oldridge had a heart attack shortly after the Woodruffe Cross Country race on 28th May. He is fortunate to have come through the ordeal well and even got out for a 40 minute run just 3 weeks later. However, over to the side you can see a pic of his running spikes, sadly found abandoned about 1km from the finish line at Woodruffes. No photoshop or trick photography either! Of the five running races, Feilding Moa athetes took line honours in four of them and their was a great depth of support hence the Team wins.  Again a well organised event by Hawera Harriers, a challenging course and  good spirit of competition make this a trip worthy of the effort.  Will post full results here as they come available.

Congratulations to the 2009 winners:

Boys, BA Wilson Cup, KARL WERNER

Colts, Galbraith Cup,  FLETCHER HORSFIELD

Senior Men, Lamberton Shield, PAUL WASLEY

Girls,  Russell Cup, GENEA HILL

Junior Women, Salisbury Cup, KRISTIE HYDE

Senior Women, Way Cup,       SANDI PEARSON

The Handicap trophies represent both consistency of effort and attendance throughout the season.

2009 Club Champions

Paul Macdermid was clearly out to have his name engraved on the Mens championship trophy, covering the first kilometre of the 10km road race in a blistering 3 minutes 10 seconds with Craig McLean seven seconds back and Maria Bentley on his shoulder.

Positions remained that way to the finish on the Beaconsfield Valley Rd out and back course, which provides an ascent/descent of around 60 metres. Macdermid won in 34 minutes 21 seconds, just over a minute ahead of McLean and Maria Bentley in a smart time of 36:10.

The colts, junior women and women had a combined start in their respective 5km championships.

Fletcher Horsfield led out for the first 5km with Stephanie Dickins best of the rest to half way. Positions soon changed with Wendy Cottrell-Teahan putting in a change of pace from half way, pushing Horsfield all the way to the line but not quite catching him. Stephanie Dickins was the best of the rest in winning the junior womens trophy.

In the under-14 championship, the Macdermid name will be engraved on to two more trophies. Kara Macdermid won the girls grade convincingly in 11 minutes 23 seconds while younger brother Noah took out the boys race half a minute ahead of Karl Werner.

18th July 2009 Halcombe Relays

Congratulations to Palmerston North Harriers mens team on fastest time overall and just 25 seconds short of the course record.

And the Flymoa's (Moa womens team) set a new course record for women, taking over 3 minutes off the previous best for a womens team. Nick Berry (Wanganui) established a new lap record on leg 3 of 16:57, a whopping 36 seconds faster than John Mudgways previous record (and John is no slouch). Full results on the Results page

4th July 2009 North Island Cross country.

Read about the three medals to Moa's in the Results page. Huge fields and quality running all round so great to see the Moa singlet to the fore in many of the races. On overall points Moa were 14th out of 45 clubs participating - ans excellent result for a small team.

27TH JUNE 2009 MOA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to the 2009 cross country champions:

BOYS UNDER 14:   Jack Cartridge

GIRLS UNDER 14:   Kara Macdermid

COLTS:                Fletcher Horsfield

JUNIOR WOMEN:    Stephanie Dickins

SENIOR WOMEN:    Sandy Pearson

SENIOR MEN:         Paul Macdermid

Conditions could not have been better for the Feilding Moa cross country championships held at David & Andrea Thomson's Kiwitea farm on Saturday 27 June. Rain held off and ground conditions were firm and fast.

The open mens 9km race was won by one of our newer members, Paul Macdermid who had to fend off a determined challenge from Steve Stannard. They were neck and neck most of the way and it was only in the final 1200 metres that Macdermid got awayto record a 31 seconds victory. The race for third and fourth was equally close with Rob Dabb just managing to hold back the persistent challenge of Dave Walters over the final 3km.

One of the days best performances was the win by Kara Macdermid in the under 14 girls race. Her time of 12 minutes 9 seconds was exceptional and she should be very hard to beat at the North Island cross country championships in Taupo next weekend. See Results page for full details including sealed handicap placings

Look out for these guys going fit and fast in coming weeks in cross country.

Feilding Moa 2008 Annual Awards

Club Person of The Year: Greg Oldridge

Since Greg joined the club several years ago he has always been prepared to offer ideas for improvement and back those up by doing more than his share in the background. Greg helped initiate the monthly Moa newsletter and has continued to edit it each month as well as write much of the copy. He also helped get the Wednesday 6pm club runs going and is perhaps the most regular of all attendees. From a handful in the first few months we regularly get a dozen or so athletes out for this enjoyable pack run. I could go on further, about BBQ's and jokes etc... but all in all Greg is a most deserving recipient of this years award and a great example of a true “club” person.

Most Improved Girl: Kaitlin McDonald

Most Improved Boy: Jared Greenfield

Kaitlin and Jared both started the season a it tentatively, coerced no doubt by their parents, and not too sure how they would enjoy the running. But both in their own way have gone from strength to strength during the year so perhaps no coincidence that they also won the respective trophy for overall handicap points. We hope to see you both back next season and see see your ongoing enthusiasm and improvement.

Overall Handicap Points for cross country and road races:

Boys: 1. Jared Greenfield; 2. Tim Sheehan; 3. Carl Werner

Girls: 1. Kaitlin McDonald; 2. Genea Hill; 3. Georgia Hill

Junior Women: 1. Stephanie Dickins; 2. Ariana Blackwood; 3. Kristy Hyde

Junior Men: 1. Cameron McNaught; 2. Nathaneal Robinson; 3. Ezra Robinson

Women: 1. Helen Dickins; 2. Debra Arnold; 3. Wendy Cottrell-Teahan

Men: 1. Paul Wasley; 2. Murray Greenfield; 3. Roy Homewood

Consistent attendance and a steady improvement across the season are required to secure the much sought after handicap Points trophies at Feilding Moa. It can be difficult for the fastest runner in a grade to hold their own on points – as they are constantly re-handicapped on performance. So it is a quite a significant achievement for Stephanie Dickins to win the Moa cross country champs, road champs and the handicap points in the junior women's grade. To cap this off, Stephanie also won the NZ Secondary Schools cross country junior girls title and secured a bronze medal at the NZ Cross Country Championships. A great season.

Feilding Moa Athlete earns another National medal

At the NZ Road Champs on 6th September Wendy Cottrel-Teahan was second in the Masters Women 35-39 race over 5km in a time of 18 minutes 34 seconds. This adds to her similar placing at the NZ cross country champs earlier in the season.

13th September 2008 Marton-Wanganui Relay

Moa had four teams participate in the 66.37km journey from Marton to Wanganui via the Turakina Valley, Kaungaroa and Fordell.

There was intense rivalry the whole distance between Peter Griffins "Motormoas" and Bruce Mulcocks "Mowers", with the lead being exchanged several times. On the penultimate leg, Peter Griffin showed true team captain spirit by turning a 1min21sec deficit into a 1:06 lead. Young Raquel Lopez then did her job by staying ahead of Cath Laird over the final leg to record a well deserved fourth place overall for the Motormoas. See Results page for more detail
