20th August NZ Road Championship, Wellington GOLD medal in the W40-44 ! In the first event on the day, the 5km Masters Women, Wendy Cottrell-Teahan won the W40-44 grade in 18 minutes 31 seconds, just a few metres separating her and the fast finishing Sally Anderson of Wellington. This was Wendy's third NZ title this season, having already won the Marathon and Mountain Running gold medals. Her Manawatu-Wanganui team mates, Katherine Stannard, Paula Conder and Melissa Thorne backed up well to secure the BRONZE medal in the teams competition. The Masters Mens 10km saw 90 men line up, the
largest field of the day. A number of sharp turns
meant for plenty of jostle for position in
the early stages of the race. Highlight was
a silver medal to Ian Carter (Bush Harriers) in the M60-64 grade in 37
minutes 55 seconds, while John Thomson was just out of the medals in fourth place.
Together with Robert Dabb and Kevin Rolls
they won the BRONZE teams medal.

us last season, and he was a country mile
out on estimated time ... come a long way

of her 3km estimated time. Looks like Camryn
forgot about his estimate and blasted around
the course a full 5 minutes "too fast",

didn't show much on an example by being
4:24 too fast. Mary King

6th August Athletics Manawatu Wanganui Road Champs Click for Results Karl Werner was the first Moa to run, and equipped himself well in quite a strong Boys 12 field over 3km. He held on well for a well deserved 3rd place. Wendy Cottrell-Teahan dominated the masters women 5km, winning in a great time of 18:38. Melissa Thorne ran 20:53 in what must have been close to a PB. Ariana Blackwood made a game start in the W19, but had to ease back mid-race, though still finished 2nd. Look for a fast time from Ari at the upcoming NZ Champs. It was an all Moa affair in the Senior Women, starin g with the men for a 10km challenge. Gemma Cartwright fired off a 40:50 (sub-40 can't be far away!) to lead in Andrena Clarke, Charlotte Wall and Victoria Sugden. Moa was well represented in the Masters Men 10km with Rob Dabb and Chris Smith winning their age groups, both sub-40 minutes. Kevin Rolls (55-59) and Roger Woodruffe (65-69) also won their age group. Once agiain a well organised event by Wanganui Harriers with friendly officials and timely results. 30th July Ferguson Rd Open handicap Men. women and juniors all did the 7.2km undulating Ferguson Rd/James Rd/Mt Stewart Circuit. A challenging uphill start, followed by a good hill at 3km.but at the least the last 2.3km was all downhill. Peter Griffin, starting on 12:40 from Go was able to hit the lead over the last km fro the overall handicap win. While 2nd to 10th place was a rapidly changing scene with just 1 minute separating them. Nick Johnston was the fastest overall, averaging a crisp 3:27/km. 2nd July North Island Cross Country Champs, Taupo Feilding Moa take two titles at Taupo At the 2011 North Island Cross Country Championships on 2nd July Feilding Moa members won two races and placed a close second in another. In the Boys 10 year 1000 metres, Noah Macdermid hit the front after 300 metres but was make to work hard all the way to the line by Whakatane's Regan Wilson. Macdermid won by 5 metres in 3 minutes 39 seconds. Clubmate Benjamin Wall was placed 8th in 3:51. In the Girls 12 year 2000 metre race featuring Zia Macdermid of Feilding Moa, the race unfolded in a very similar fashion to Noah's, with the lead shared off and on with Rebecca McCafferty of Tauranga. It wasn't until the final 150m sprint to the line that McCafferty managed to extend the lead and win in what was a race record time of 7:15 with Zia a clear second in 7:22 followed by Serena Murrihy of Taumaranui. Of note, these three had raced against each other in the 1000m in 2009 where Murrihy won, MacDermid was second and McCafferty fourth, so very pleasing to see young athletes continuing in the sport and testing each other well. Kara Macdermid, 13, opted for the more testing 4000m on the Womens 16 & 19 grades combined race. She took an early lead from W19 Kerry White of Te Aroha (the 2010 W16 champion), going through the first 2000m lap in 7:09 20 metres ahead of White. Part way into lap two White took the overall lead and Nicole Mitchell of Wellington (also in the W19 grade) challenged on Kara's shoulder. An excellent sprint finish saw Kara into second place overall and win the W16 title in 15:09 from Anneke Grogan (Tauranga) and Ariana Harper (Wellington). Other Feilding Moa performances were M50-54 (6000m) : Rob Dabb, 5th in 24:00; Alan Wall 23rd 37:22. M65-69 (6000m) Roger Woodruffe 6th in 30:35. Nate Levin, after leading in the first kilometre, finished 10th in the B14 3000m in 11:02. In the feature event of the day, the Mens 9000 metre, pre-race favourite, Stephen Lett of Auckland, undefeated so far this cross country season, made his break 5km into the race and held off some fast finishers to win in 28:35. Moa's in that event were 23rd Paul Macdermid 32:13; 26th Nicholas Johnston 32:55 and 31st Quentin Copley 34:03

Feilding Moa members all performed well at the NZ Champs, Year 9, 3000m: NZ Champion, Kara Macdermid 10:19. She was 33 seconds ahead of 2nd place and also faster than the Junior girls winning time for the same distance. Stephanie Dickins won this same race in 2008. "The rain was fair bucketing down and water was rolling off the hills in sheets".
Lawrie, now in his late seventies no longer runs but a scan of the Woodruffe Cup shows he won it in 1960,61,62, 64, 1986, and also in 1994 – an impressive 35 year spread of successful performances.
The course on Saturday was described as "soft and sticky, suiting the lightweights" and included six gates and two water hazards per 3.5km lap. (a bit further than the advertised 3km per lap due to a late change to fit in with farming practices).
The open handicap format saw Wendy Cottrell-Teahan give a 19 minute 30 second headstart to those runners off "go" in the womens 7km race. She set about the task of steadily reeling in the field , finally taking the lead in the last kilometre. Katherine Stannard and Melissa Thorne had a close finish for second and third.
Nate Levin, the sole junior man to run recorded the fastest 7km of the day in 30:54. A good field of Junior Women also did the 7km route, and in a similar outcome to the womens race, backmarker Elizabeth Stannard, overcame a 19:30 handicap to win, with Stephanie Dickins 23 seconds away. This pair recently won their respective age groups at the Manawatu Secondary Schools cross country champs.
The mens 10.5km race had 26 face the handicap start. Backmarker was Steve Stannard on 30 minutes 10 seconds. And it was nearly another case of the backmarker beating the field, Stannard coming in second, just 9 seconds adrift of Nick Johnston – running off a 28:10 handicap. This is Nicks first season with Moa and his first trophy. He also won this years Feilding Half Marathon. Todd O'Carroll worked hard off his 12 minute handicap to keep the rest of the field at bay, only just being pipped near the line by visitor Will O'Connor, who had started with a 29:10 handicap.

16 April McNaughts scratch cross country RESULTS Drizzly rain to begin with turned to heavy showers during the recent Feilding Moa Harrier cross country race held at Ian James Lethbridge Rd farm. The 2km circuit became greasy underfoot in the latter stages of the senior races, with those wearing spikes gaining a distinct advantage. The juniors and women 4km race saw new members
Gemma Cartwright and Giorgie Miller-Thevenard
go through the first lap together. Cartwright,
in the senior womens grade, was only able
to outkick Giorgie on the final downhill
for a narrow victory. Giorgie won the junior
womens grade The mens race included one of the natural hazards of cross country running – a mob of heifers found the course markers irresistable to lick and dislodge, making the marked route harder to find. Quentin Copley, leading at the time, lost a bit of ground while figuring the course out, however composed himself and still went on to win a minute clear of Hamish Meacheam. Dave Walters, Chris Smith and Rob Dabb all followed close behind.

results are here Lap by lap account from the Masters Men 40-49 team: Lap 1: Ron Werner got us away to a great start, targeting 4:30/km he burnt up the first 5km inside 21 minutes. Despite an uphill finish to grind out he came in well under target by 1.5 minutes Lap 2: Kevin Palmer was lucky to secure this lap which Rob had named "The Flyer" due to the downhill start and downhill finish. All was looking OK and Kev was gaining on an Energy City runner until 6.5km and this dirty great 1km+ long hill reared up. Can't remember seeing that in the notes! Meanwhile, about 400m back the Olympic and Hutt Valley womens team members were running neck and neck making ground. The last 2km was down about as steep as the up had been. The girls cruised up onto Kev's shoulder inside the last 400m but a determined finish saw him keep them at bay. lap 3: The Toughie, 11.3km. Adrian Henderson looked like a good strong bloke to tackle this. The first hill came and went and he was looking strong at 4km in just over 4 minutes/km. The second hill was a bit harder but still holding his own, the 3rd hill was a doozie, including a tunnel half way up, and he was 35 secs down on Olympic while Sara Gardner from Hutt Valley was eating up the road like it wa sa series of 400m reps - a stunning run we thought. As we wated at transition for Adrian to finish, vans from the first Senior Men's A teams were turning up, those teams tarted 40 minutes behind us so were obviously now not far behind. Adrian turned in a very respectable 49:44 for the toughest and longest lap of the day. Lap 4: Paul Bond got underway, aiming to pull in Olympic women who were now 46 sec ahead of us. Four minutes after him the Pakuranga mens team started the same lap, with New Brighton 10 metres behind and Canterbury University a further 200m back. Paul close the gap on Olympic to 25 sec, and when the Pakuranga runner went past, he upped his game and matched him stride for stride. Real good stuff, well for 150m anyway! That mid-lap flurry perhaps took its toll, with the Olympic girl regaining the gap to around 50 sec by the end of the leg. Lap 5: The Long Drop, named because of a gully a km or two into the run; this was Peter Turner's last serious workout before his first marathon at Masterton on 10th October. But what goes down must go up, so after the downhill, it crossed the historic Bertrand Rd suspension bridge into a stiff climb. Pete held his own though and hit the 5km mark in 22:15 and was looking good - but feelig like crap. Rob earned a wooden spoon nomination then, thinking this was an 8.2km lap, he confidently told Pete "just 3km to go". A few moments kater the penny dropped, whoops, this was in fact a 10.8km, so 3km later Pete got the same news "3km to go". .. that sort of news doesn't really inspire a lift in tempo. Sorry Pete! Lap 6: While we waited for Pete, Kevin P got an icecream at the dairy, Chris warmed up by chatting up the Olympic girls, Rob had a nervous one at the local hall and we saw the traffic management truck arriving - an ominous sign that now all te esenior mens teams had blasted by, we were likely the tail end charlie team. Mmm time for some navel gazing. Anyway, Pete finished the last 2km long straight creditably, collapsed in a heap, and Chris Smith set off on his 8.2km leg trying to close up a 5min 37 gap on the Olympic girls. And he flew along too. As the clock ticked past 4 hours, gap was now just 3:53 behind. By laps end Olympic women had caught up a Scottosh womens team and Chris came around the corner just 2 minutes down on them. Lap 7: This leg started Outside the Sentry Hill winery - Kevin Rolls, the elder stateman of the team, took over the chase from Chris while Kevin Palmer was sampling the fruit wines. Once KP got his brown paper bag we headed off in support of Kev. In no time at all he had reeled in the Scottish woman, but the Olympic girl was going quite well, buit the gap slowly closed. With about 2km to go he was just 20 sec down. Rob, who was to run the final lap urged Kev to hit the gas and close the gap. He quipped: "I'll take 10 seconds, leave the other 10 for you". The last km of this lap was downhill and Kev responded well, shot past Olympic and handed Rob a 20-30 sec gap. Thanks Kev. Lap 8: Rob Dabb turned up Friday night with a wheezing cough and injured back that made movement difficult. Popping pain killer pills like lollies all day and puffing on an inhaler got him on the start line though and 4 minutes adrift of our next "target" the Hutt valley women who had surged by us on Lap 3. After 3km or so the gap was 3 minutes and shortly after Rob could see the orange singlet half a km or so ahead. Hutt Valley were getting worried. At the top of the next hill we were 90 sec behind, one hill later just 70 meters to close and hit the front with 3km left to run. Inglewood loomed close and after a short run through town, the "Glory Lap" finished with 300 mteres around the athletics track. Total time 5hrs 34 minutes - pretty close to our pre-race estimate of 5hrs 30 min. Highlights from the other teams: Mark Searle from Palmerston North Athletics stepped
in to fill a gap in the Composite team. His
run on leg 2 was an impressive 3:40/km -
and remember this was the lap with a solid
1km long hill part way through. This undoubtedly
helped the team stay in touch right to lap
8 and be in a medal challenging position. Wendy Cottrell-Teahan made mincemeat of leg 3, The Toughie, soaring past many a masters men team. Her time of 46min 51 sec only eclipsed Dave Walters time on the same leg by 1 second - top laps guys! The Composite team included Elizabeth (13) and Robert Stannard (12) sharing the 10.8km lap 5. Both put in great performances, averaging 4:22/km and certainly turned a few older and taller heads. Newest Moa, Vanessa Story, normally a 100m-400m sprinter, took on
Lap 6 for the women. A niggling hamstring
got more and more niggly but she wouldn't
give in. Meanwhile at the Sentry Hill winery
Deb Lardner was doing her warmup on another side road
- glancing over her shoulder she saw Vanessa
crest the last hill with only 150m to go
- but that's about how far away Deb was
from transition too! There followed a comical
sprint to the line, Moa vs Moa, which had
the time keepers confused, but was won by
Vanessa with Deb carrying on to start her
lap. Silver Medal for Moa! Daniel Pinkney ran the last lap for the Composite team, and soon chewed thru' the field in front of him to bring the team into the silver medal place in the Composite grade - the first podium finish Moa has had in a national road relay for many many years

Rob Dabb was 2nd and Howe 3rd. Sealed Handicap: Two "bolters" from the pack, Deb Lardner and Steve Butcher, will no doubt receive more attention from the handicappers from now on after turning in their best performance season to date in the women and mens events respectively. Steve commented that perhaps doing a warm up for a change made the difference! 10th July handicap relay at Timona Park

as run! Purists love this type of course!

Regarded as one of the toughest courses on the local calendea, the 2.5km circuit includes two high fences to scale and a 70 metre hill to climb. The under 14 year old boys and girls grades raced first over one lap. An enthusiastic fast start saw several runners in contention as they scaled the first fence and commenced the hill climb. Some fell off the pace as gravity started to have its say while Zia Macdermid and Robert Stannard reached the summit first. Zia dominated the fast downhill section to win line honours and also secure the cup for best girl on sealed handicap. Robert was second and also won the boys sealed handicap cup. The women and juniors contested two laps. Fastest time went to an under-14 runner, Kara Macdermid in 21:25 just ahead of the colt Joshua Hughes in 21:30 and first time runner Nate Levin in 21:48. Sealed handicap cup for women went to ex-Wellington Olympic runner Victoria Sugden, in her first year studying sport at UCOL. Stephanie Dickins won the junior women cup and Joshua Hughes the colts. The mens race was 10km, meaning four times up the hill. It saw an interesting match up with Steve Stannard and Paul Macdermid facing off for thr first time this season. They were through the first lap together in a swift 9:42. Stannards more regular racing started to show and with a 9:56 second lap established a 100 metre plus lead. He doubled this on the penultimate lap, and while Macdermid ran 20 seconds quicker than Stannard over the final lap, the gap was too big to close out. The Vautier Cup for sealed handicap was won by one of the "journeymen" of the sport, Roy Homewood, whose much improved run resulted in a win 22 seconds ahead of John Thomson. . 1st May 2010 Handicap cross country race At Banner's farm, Junction Rd West, Stanway. While there was firm conditions underfoot rather than mud, this made it a bit just as tricky/technical due to the lumpy nature of the land, which like most in the region had got quite wet and therefore uneven in the spring. Two steady hills for lap kept the sweat flowing freely - great feeling though when the last hill was behind us! We welcomed a good number of first time runners, some who had never run a farm course before - we hope to see you all again. Mark Thompson 47:29 Race Report:The first Fielding Moa cross country race of the season held on a 2.5km circuit at Timona Park, Feilding. Conditions were warm & sunny and very firm underfoot. The Under-14’s race saw a sprint finish between the boys winner, Robert Stannard, and girls winner, Zia Macdermid. Robert winning by a narrow margin. The junior women’s 5km event included two thirteen year olds, Kara Macdermid and Elizabeth Stannard opting for the longer challenge. Macdermid ran away to a convincing win in 20 minutes 30 seconds with Stephanie Dickins in second place. Dickins is only just re-building her base of distance running after a very successful track season over shorter distance, culminating in winning the 300m hurdles (womens 16) at the NZ Athletics Champs two weeks ago. The womens was won by Katherine Stannard – although nearly a minute behind her daughter Elizabeth – followed by Wendy Cottrell-Teahan. In the three lap mens race, 7.5km, Steve Stannard and Damian Howe led through the first couple of kilometers, soon being joined by Shane Reed. By the start of the final lap, it was between Reed and Stannard who were locked together. Reed recently came 5th in the New Zealand 100km champs at Taupo, and perhaps that base of strength came to the fore over the closing stages allowing him to pull out a 9 second win. The “Muddling Moa of the Week” wooden spoon was awarded to Shirley and Raewyne for being able to sustain a steady chatter of conversation the entire distance. 7 November 2009. 5:10:04. Race report: Andrew Lysaght from Tokoroa won the 55th Feilding Marathon on Saturday 7th November on an out and back course which featured a 140 metre ascent on the way out and into a headwind. Over the first half of the race he had company from Tim Carroll (Palmerson North) who was competing in the two persons teams event. Carroll getting to the Stanway Hall turnaround first in 1:22:30, just 25 seconds ahead of Lysaght, who was able to maintain an even pace to win in 2 hours 45 minutes 24 seconds. Brendan Quirke of Hutt valley was second on 3:02:37 followed by Peter Bratby, Wellington, in his second only marathon in 3:17:37. The womens race was closely contested between
a previous winner Patricia Stichbury(PNth) and Feilding Moa club member Debra Arnold. Arnold won in 3:38:11 just over a minute
from Stitchbury.
Hutt Valley Marathon Clinic brought
up a strong contingent of walkers again,
having dominated this section for several
years now. Malcolm Gray (Hutt) 5:07:24
came through to oust Ashley Smith (Waitara)
5:09:34. Smith a former National
Championship 100km ultra distance runner
winner has just recently taken up walking.
The Women's Marathon Walk was dominated
again by Chris Leahy (Hutt) 5:10:04 (another
former runner who has turned to walking)
with Palmerston North's, Averil Sheehan
5:13:35 finishing runner-up.
Tim Carroll and John Bourke of Palmerston North won the teams race in
2:55:29 from Brad Johnston and Peter Turner of Feilding Moa. The teams walk was won by
Kay Richdale and Brenda Bicknell of Manawatu Striders in 5hours 25 minutes. The event was notable in the large number
of Marathon Centurions taking part - those who have completed 100
or more marathons. These included local organiser David Penfold,
Albie Jane (Stratford), Michael Stewart (Hutt
Valley) Ashley Smith (Waitara), Alec
Day (Auck.YMCA), Bill Hodge (Auck.YMCA),
Roger Morrison (Wanganui), Phil Kirk (Auck.YMCA),
Dennis Jordan (New Plymouth), David Hamilton
(Pakuranga) Steve Tubbs (HV), Bill Richardson
(Invercargill) and Malcolm Gray (Hutt VAlley)
Michael Stewart has not missed a Feilding
Marathon in 32 years, and despite injury
was able to complete another and add to his
total of over 450 marathons.
Using age WMA age adjustment tables, Lysaght
was the overall winner, with 73 year old
Alec Day of Auckland 3 minutes back in 2:48:38.
Adjusting the womens times saw Patricia Stitchbury
(W51) "put" 6 minutes on Debra
Arnold (W48).
The marathon was started by the 1955 winner, Norman Pearce , now aged 83, from Taihape. Pearce was a
sprinter in his early 20's, who
turned to distance running after being so
impressed with the finishing sprint put in by
a runner completing a marathon he watched. In
1953 he took part in the Waiouru-Taihape
32 km road race, found he could do that easy,
and that's when he started running
marathons. Feilding was his first marathon,
and he won it in 3 hours 9 minutes.
He recalls that " in 1955, it
was hot day and in those days the first drinks
station was not until 10 mile (16km), as
opposed to today whwen they are every 4-5
km."
The Feilding Marathon, while not the oldest
in New Zealand, has the NZ record for its
unbroken run of 55 races and is ranked about
15th on the world list, led by the 113 consecutive
Boston Marathons.

Boys Under 10, 1.6km Noah Macdermid of Feilding Moa quickly went to the lead alongside Harrison Porrit from Pahiatua. Macdermid went on to win in 6 minutes 23 seconds, while a battle for the minor placing saw Porrit secure second place, just 1 second ahead of Thomas Condor (Wanganui) with a further second to Karl Werner (Moa). 1. She was matched stride for stride over the first half of the race by boys 14 winner Liam Woolford (Palmerston North). Turning in 5:28, she showed a lot of spirit to finish in 11:01 given the slight uphill gradient on the second half. 1. Kara Macdermid (Moa) 11:01; 2. Michaela Walker (Wang.) 12:05; 3. Gemma Dekker (PNAHC) 14;10; Erica Paterson (Wang) 15:55 Boys Under 14 3km: 1. Liam Woolford (PNAHC)11:30; 2. Oliver McLean (Moa) 12:42; 3. Daniel Churchill (PNAHC) 13:16 The Masters women and girls 16 were combined in a 5km race, making for some excellent racing. As expected, Wendy Cottrell-Teahan (Moa) dominated the race and was never really challenged on her way to a 19:08 win. Behind her a group of five runners were locked together for the first half of the race until G16 Ariana Blackwood (Moa) pushed the pace and made a gap of 20 metres. Team mate Stephanie Dickins challenge was curtailed by getting a bad stitch at about the same time, however she recovered well to take second place behind Blackwood in the girls 16. Meanwhile, the race for second place in the masters women saw Sandy Pearson (Moa) and Paula Condor (Wanganui) still locked side by side with 1km to go, A surge by Pearson up the final hill opened a gap and she went on for an excellent time of 20:25. Girls Under 16 5km: 1. Ariana Blackwood (Moa) 20:11; 2. Stephanie Dickins (Moa) 21:19; 3. Amber Walker (Wang.) 23:07 4. Rebekkah O'Leary (Wang) 24:54; 5. Kymberley Le Lievre (Wang) 25:54; 6. Starters included the men and womens winners from the previous weeks Palmerston North half marathon, Tim Carroll (PNAHC) and Maria Bentley (Moa). These two were part of a leading pack of six runners for the first 3km of the race. Andrew Davenport (PNAHC) upped the pace around that stage to open up a small gap on Carroll, Bentley and Mark Searle (PNAHC). A further few seconds back were Craig McLean (PNAHC) and Rob Condor (Wanganui) with Men 19 runners Daniel Pinkney (PNAHC) and Cameron McNaught (Moa) part of a six strong chase group a further half minute down. Davenport went on to win in 35 minutes 18 seconds from Carroll and Searle. McLean and Condor eventually caught Maria Bentley in the last kilometre, never the less she won the open womens in an excellent time of 36:20. Bentley's main target this year is the New Zealand half marathon championships in November in Auckland where she hopes to go under 1 hour 18 minutes for the first time. Senior Women 10km: 1. Pinkney responded well, but the gap that opened of 50 metres was to much to overcome. Both Juniors recorded personal bests in well under 38 minutes. 1. Cameron McNaught (Moa) 37:34; 2. 4th July North Island Cross Country Champs, Taupo Feilding Moa athletes came away with THREE
medals at the North lsland Cross country
championships held at Spa Park, Taupo on
Saturday 4th July. In the first race of the
day, girls 10 over 1000m, Zia Macdermid was second, just a metre or so behind winner
Serena Murrihy of Taumaranui. These two battled
shoulder to shoulder over the final 300 metres
in a thrilling finish and a quality time
of 3 minutes 40 seconds. (last year Serena
was minute or more ahead of Zia in winning
the same age group, so a great improvement!) In the Girls 12 event over 2000 metres, Kara Macdermid quickly went to the front and established a large gap on the field, winning comfortably 12 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. The Girls 14 race run over 3000 metres had a quality line up featuring the current junior secondary schools cross country champion, Suzannah Lynch (Olympic Wellington), last years junior secondary school champion in Feilding Moa's Stephanie Dickins and the 2008 NZ cross country champion in this age group, Stevie Paine of Wellington. And this was the order they finished. Stephanie held off a fast finish by Stevie Paine to claim a well deserved silver medal. In the Womens 19 raced over a distance of 4000 metres. Olivia Burne (Palmerston North), took an early lead on the first lap. Danielle Trevis (North Harbour Bays) took the lead near half way, going to on to win with Olivia having to settle for a creditable 3rd place. Raewyne Hyde made a huge improvement on last years run
of nearly 2 minutes. And you will see childrens
handicapper Peter Blackwood finishing in the masters 8km North Island Cross Country, Taupo 4th July, Feilding Moa unless otherwise noted: Girls 10, 1000m: 2. Zia Macdermid (Moa) 3:41; 9. 30th may 2009 Hughes Memorial, Hawera Moa Success in Taranaki! Over 30 Feilding Moa athletes travelled to
Hawera on 30th May to take part in one of the cross country
events held annually in the lower North Island.
We achieved a 15 top three placings including six wins plus three teams titles,
which ranks among one of the best ever raids
by Feilding Moa on this Taranaki race.
The Girls 16 year old race over 3000 metres was a cracker. Taking on the older girls was 11 year old Kara Macdermid who took the lead early on. The field were content to sit back, assuming she would soon fade from inexperience. However after the first 1000 metres it was obvious she meant to stay out front and the chase began in earnest from Moa teammate and 2008 Junior NZ secondary school cross country champion Stephanie Dickins. It wasn't until the final 200 metres that Dickins was able to use her stronger finish and ½ metre height advantage to push on and win. With Eilysh Burney 4th and Raquel Lopez-Lozano 8th, Feilding Moa collected the teams title. In the combined womens 4000 metres race, nationally ranked Olivia Burne of Palmerston North lead from start to finish to win in a smart time of 15:12. Wendy Cottrell-Teahan of Feilding Moa, competing in the W35-39 grade was second overall a minute behind Burne. Feilding went 1-2 in the W40-44 grade through Lisa Kuhnert and Sandy Pearson and along with Kristie Hyde in the W19, these four ladies won the overall womens team title. The mens race saw a close battle in the M20-34, with Tom Osborne (Wanganui), a medallist at the 800 metres NZ Championships in March, stepping up and delivering in this longer endurance event, winning in 28:18. A great time given the greasy and slippery conditions to contend with over the undulating course. Feilding Moa highlights were Paul Macdermid second in the M35-39; Robert Dabb first and Chris Smith third in the M45-49 and Roger Woodruffe second in the M60-64. 2000m Girls 11: 1. Great to have many of our younger members supporting this event and doing their bit for a team. In the prelim 1500m childrens race it was a Moa trifecta with Ulysses Lopez-Lozano leading his younger brother Carlos in by a few seconds with Jack Cartridge in 3rd place. Raquel Lopez-Lozano was 1st girl with Melissa Blackwood out-kicking a girl twice her size to be 2nd girl home. Our Women's 1 relay team of Lisa, Ariana, Sarah and Wendy blitzed the 12-team field to record an historic win - the first time a Moa womens team has won this trophy and ending a 6-year winning streak of Palmerston North Harriers. Of note, our women recorded the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fastest lap times so a great all round team performance. Our Mens 1 team was encouraged by the Womens
efforts and Cameron McNaught took the team
into the lead by the end of leg 1, eventually
finishing 4th out of 16 teams. Full results

30 August 2008: Sealed Handicap road race, Spur Rd, Colyton. A new course, more undulating than flat but with no really serious inclines, saw many run at a faster clip than Beaconsfield the week before. Paul Wasley was the quickest man over the 9km event and also won the sealed handicap. Simonne Le Quesne was delighted with her first handicap win of the season in the womens event, 6 seconds ahead of Debra Arnold. Genea Hill ran very well to take out the girls 3km, While we had just two boys running, only 2-seconds separated them on handicap. For complete results click here

Click here for offsite Results After a week of rain and wind we really didn't know what to expect at Waikanae. The day turned out fine and surprisingly firm underfoot. There were some great athletes on show, including some home-grown talent. Highlights for Moa were a 2nd place in the MW35-39 from Wendy Cottrell-Teahan and a hard fought 3rd to Stephanie Dickins in the G14. 26th July 2008 TURKEY TROT 45 members and friends turned up on a chilly afternoon for the Turkey Trot. A fantastic attendance despite the conditions. With most other winter sports langishing at home because of closed fields, isn't it great to know Harriers is always on! The children showed great skill at estimating their time. Ulysses Lopez came home only 2 seconds different ot his estimated time and Kaitlin McDonald was nearly as close at 5 seconds. And congratulations to a number of others who came with 1% of estimated times including Sharlene Robson who was the "best" performed Walker. For full results Click Here 19th July. AMW Cross Country Champs, Waikanae Held at Waikanae in conjunction with the Wellington Champs, Feilding Moa was well represented and were successful in taking a number of championship titles. 12th July HALCOMBE RELAY Wow! What a great days running and walking
last weekend with the Halcombe Relays.
Congratulations to the Striders team led
by Alan McKey who once again had the fastest
walk in 3:18.49. The run section was taken
out by Wanganui Blue, but not without a determined
challenge the whole way by Levin Harriers
two person team of Billy McDougall and Andrew
Burns.
The eight walking teams started from just
after 11:00am and deserve the biggest prize
as they copped more of the rain and wind
than the 18 run teams, who had it pretty
much rain free for the first half of the
event.
Alongside the relay teams there were 7 men
and women taking on the entire 29.2km on
their own with several of these soloists
completing the course quicker than some of
the six-person teams. Best solo efforts went
to James Faber of Linton 2:09:08 and Dave
Walters of Ohakea 2:14.11. Army prevails
over airforce!
Feilding Moa Women's team were over 11
minutes under the women's team course
record in 2:10.12, and fifth run team overall.
Fastest runs came from Andrew Davenport (Bush)
in 3:29/km on Leg 3. Wendy-Cottrell-Teahan
(Moa Women) blasted out a 3:51/km on
the last lap to be fastest women on the day.
The Lelievre's from Wanganui and Greenfield's
from Halcombe had four family members each
taking part. Now how many other sports can
boast such an inclusiveness across age and
gender?
Please Note an Error in attached files which
omits the results for the Mixed Moa 1 team.

5th July North Island Cross Country, Spa Park, Taupo Six Moa's took part in the North Island Cross Country championship on Saturday 5th July. Just getting to the event was a mission due snow and ice on the roads on Saturday. As it was, everyone arrived safely, but once in Taupo, conditions deteriorated meaning those wanting to get home couldn't due to road closures. The Burney's were about the last vehicle allowed south through National Park on Saturday afternoon and that was not without its drama, with the 4WD slip sliding its way several times. As far as the race went, the pumice-based course was as usual fast and firm and the first three races of the day saw new records set. Despite the weather 595 athletes participated across a wide range of grades. Temperatures rarely got above 5-6 degrees. Raewyne Hyde got a dose of hail/ice during her race. Then at 2.30pm just before the final race of the day it snowed! Feilding Moa results: (full results at www.taupoharriers.org.nz ) 10 Year Girls, 1000m: 20. Hawera Feilding Moa Harrier runners took thirteen top three finishes including four title wins. In the Boys/Girls 11 2000m, Carlos Lopez quickly went to the lead, carrying on to win well by over 20 seconds. Georgia & Genea Hill were second and third respectively among a large field of boys and girls. Next up was the Girls 16 over 3000m. Hawera and Wanganui athletes lead out, but were well covered by the Moa trio of Ariana Blackwood, Stephanie Dickins and Eilysh Burney. These three worked well together. Stephanie took over the lead from Ariana around 1.5km and went on to win in a good time of 12min 5 seconds. Eilysh ran a controlled race, attacking on the hills in the last kilometre to move from 6th to 3rd and then with a strong last 200 metres got up to a well deserved second place. Ariana, who made the early pace for us, held on for a well run 4th place. Third win of the afternoon went to Nathaniel Robinson in the Boys 16 event. He started from the front and never let up, winning by over a minute. This weekend will be an interesting matchup when he runs head to head against Cameron McNaught at Vautiers. Kristie Hyde was second to Olivia Burne (PNAHC) in the W19. Olivia ran a great race, holding off Senior womens winner rene Graham of New Plymouth by a few metres. Shirley Fotheringham and Raewyne Hyde were second and third respectively in the masters women 45-49 grade. Shirley also won the major spot prize of the day, a colour television. The Men 19 grade was combined with the senior and masters men over 8000m. Hawera's Jason Cressingham was out on his own at the front the whole race for overall line honours while the rest of us settled initially into a large pack run. Eventually the field stretched out a bit with Cameron McNaught working his way smartly amongst the forty or so runners into 4th place overall and a win in the M19 grade. Feilding Moa's fourth win of the day. Robert Dabb was second in the Mens 45-49 age group and Nicolas Lopez-Villalobos 3rd. Palmerston North runner Andrew Davenport won the Mens 40-45 age group, beating the well regarded Hawera runners Alistair Snowdon and Richard Brewer in the process.
